This is where I throw all my ’footnotes’, until I ’write’ something to ’attach’ them to. If this is a social site I have not gotten to that yet. I hope it is not...

My son is reading The God Delusion. Should I be worried?

Answer by Kjell Pettersson:

Only if he goes on to burn his Harry Potter books or otherwise starts to behave like a fanatic. Fanatics come in all stripes and colors, but they are probably less common in families where the children are given love and attention and a reasonable amount of freedom to develop who they are.

Actually, young people are often attracted to extreme views, especially if there is a chance these may clash with family background, and opposing them may only make them go further into these views, and stay there longer, so I’d advice silk gloves, regardless of what you found your son reading. He may need to rebel, but it is not likely he has a need to be punished for that, as it is a part of becoming an adult to do so.

Also, it is a good thing with young men reading, almost whatever they read.

What are some good stories involving fortune tellers?

Answer by Kjell Pettersson:

The life story of Mme Arfvidson, 18th century in Sweden, is a good story, or a bundle of them. A recap is found at the Wikipedia page Ulrica Arfvidsson. She is said to have predicted, among other things, the regicide in 1792, years ahead, and to have warned the king when he came to her.

To what extent these things are true is one matter, but only what is on that Wikipedia page would easily provide you with the material for a novel or even a trilogy. Yes, I admit the thought has crossed my mind. And she is in fact a character, though minor, in at least two operas and a novel.

Does someone who wants something more than another person deserve it more?

Answer by Kjell Pettersson:

There is an old example of the idea which could be interpreted to say that the nature of your want is decisive, known as the Judgment of Solomon. However, that is not the ordinary interpretation, but it is still possible and does make sense in the Solomonic example. It does at least put in clear light what would make one person deserving and another one undeserving.

He who cherishes something on its own terms and not on his own terms would seem to be more deserving.

Example
Do you want the baby to make you happy or do you want to make the baby happy?

It is, however, not obvious to what extent or if at all this transfers directly to material possessions, which may, perhaps, be judged by another standard by a Solomon. After all, people are not things, which also is an idea implicit in the Judgement of Solomon.

What are the best tips and tricks for shopping for a setting to go with a diamond?

Answer by Kjell Pettersson:

I would go looking at “second hand-jewelry”, which will give you a lot of visual input that is also not dependent upon what happens to be fashionable among jewelers nowadays.

If you are lucky* you may even find something that might be repurposed to work with your diamond.

__________
EDIT
If you know or could find out the name of the cut of your diamond, you could also search online for “name-of-the-cut” and “other specifications of it” and “ring, setting or other synonyms” to see what is available to shop online and what settings are chosen for this particular cut.

__________
* If this is engagement and you care about such things, you may not want to as there may be superstitions about such. Then again, people certainly re-use rings that have been used by earlier generations, so perhaps there are no such superstitions. If superstition is no problem, second hand jewelry often costs only a fraction of new custom, as you usually pay only for the material but not for the work, meaning that you sort of get the custom for free.

When does a piece of media go viral?

Answer by Kjell Pettersson:

When it breaks boundaries and does so in a rather short time. “Break boundaries” means that you do not repeat the signal to a select group but to all your followers on Twitter (etc.), meaning your grandma may see it too.

The end of viral is when grandma and execs in marketing start referring to the viral thing or, even worse, retweet it. “Viral” as a phenomenon is now itself probably dead for precisely that reason. Someone telling you that you need “viral” in 2014 will be as up-to-date as someone telling you in 2013 that you need “social”.

Would humanity be better off if it had no morals?

Answer by Kjell Pettersson:

Concepts like “humanity” and “our species as a whole in areas such as science [etc.]” depend upon the idea of society.

A society is not possible if people do not care about one another. That is, society and social are intimately bound up with one another. Morals, in turn, is an effect of these, a way in which people attempt to find common rules; a half-step towards laws.

In other words, asking what humanity would be like without morals is a question that does not make sense, for you would not have “humanity” if there were no “morals”. It’s like asking what the legal system would be in an anarchy.
